Communication with the student is critical when teaching driving. Below are short phrases the teacher should use to aid in communication

PHRASE MEANING

1. “Adjust seat” First unlock, then pull (or push) seat to proper position for you.

2. “Start engine” Twist key, release key, and apply brake.

3. “Shift” Move gear selector lever.

4. “12 & 9” or “10 and 2” Move hands to the proper position on the wheel.

5. “Accelerate more” Gradually increase pressure on the accelerator.

6. “Stop Smoothly” Gradually apply brake & decrease pressure just before stopping.

7. “Brake more” Increase pressure on the brake pedal.

8. “Brake less” Decrease pressure on the brake pedal.

9. “Creep” Letting foot off the brake move the car about 1 foot per second.

10. “Crawling speed” Move the car 1 – 3mph.

11. “Walking speed” Move the car 3 – 5mph.

12. “Roll the wheel” Turn the wheel smoothly.

13. “Spin the wheel” Turn the wheel as fast as possible.

14. “All the way” Turn the wheel as far as possible.

15. “At the next intersection turn right. Lets turn right at the next intersection.

16. “Mirror” Check mirror for traffic behind.

17. “Communicate” Make sure others know what you intend to do (by means of signals, speed, and lane position)

18. “Signal” Set your directional signal.

19. “Slower and Closer” Slow down & position the car closer to the edge of your lane in preparation for turning.

20. “Three pulls left” Turn the wheel approximately one revolution to the left.

21. “Accelerator” Move your foot to the accelerator.

22. “Pre-aim” Point the front wheels the way you want the car to go when you accelerate.
